The 7 Levels of Working with AI

Level 1 — Chat

Most people start here. You open Claude, ask a question, get an answer. The problem is you explain yourself from scratch every single time. The output is different on every run. It works — but you’re doing most of the heavy lifting.

Level 2 — Projects

Claude has a feature called Projects that groups related conversations in one shared workspace. Every chat inside a project shares the same context and memory. You can add background documents about your business. The AI starts to remember what’s going on. Still back-and-forth — but now you have an ongoing working relationship, not a one-off conversation.

Level 3 — Skills

This is where it gets powerful. A Skill is a set of written instructions that tells Claude how to do one specific job — every time, the same way. Think of it like an employee handbook. You write it once, and now your AI knows how to create a lesson plan, draft a newsletter, or build a sales email in exactly the way you want — without re-explaining it each time.

Level 4 — Connectors

Skills are powerful, but at this level your AI employees are still isolated. 💡 In plain English: You gave your employees a skillset at Level 3. Now you’re giving them a computer and access to your actual business tools.

Level 5 — Departments

When you have multiple skills and connectors, things need organisation. Level 5 groups your AI employees into departments — Marketing, Education, Sales, Support — each with a manager. The manager routes work to the right employee, hands things off between departments, and keeps the whole operation moving without you directing every step.

Level 6 — Living Memory

At this level, your AI business has a memory that grows over time. Not just chat history — a living document that knows your brand voice, your goals, your workflows, and what’s been learned from past sessions. Every interaction adds to it. Your AI stops forgetting and starts getting smarter.

Level 7 — Chief of Staff

This is the destination. One AI to talk to. Your Chief of Staff knows every department, every employee, and every tool.
