Type the same question into ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini and you’ll likely get three different answers. That’s not a bug — it’s a feature of how these tools are built.
Different Training Data
Each AI company trained their model on different datasets — different sources, different volumes, and different curation decisions. What one model “read” during training shapes what it knows, how it frames topics, and what it considers the most useful way to respond.
Different Model Architectures
Not all large language models are built the same way. The number of parameters (think: the complexity of the network), the architecture design, and the training techniques all vary significantly. Some models are better tuned for reasoning through complex problems; others are optimized for creative writing, coding, or factual recall.
Different Fine-Tuning and Personality
After initial training, companies fine-tune their models with specific goals using human feedback — rewarding certain types of responses and discouraging others. Claude is tuned to be careful and thoughtful. ChatGPT has been tuned heavily toward conversational helpfulness. Gemini is built to integrate tightly with Google’s ecosystem. These deliberate choices create real, consistent differences in personality, style, and output approach.

Lower temperature means more consistent and precise output. Default settings differ across tools and affect answer variation even for identical prompts.
What This Means for Educators
For important tasks, it’s worth trying more than one tool and comparing outputs. Different tools have genuine, consistent strengths. Claude tends to perform well on nuanced writing and following complex multi-part instructions. ChatGPT has the broadest integrations. Gemini can access real-time Google Search results.
Don’t assume one tool is “right” and another is “wrong” when they differ — they’re different predictions from different models built with different priorities. Use that to your advantage.
For your students: teach them that AI tool selection is a skill, not just a preference. Knowing which tool to reach for and when is a core part of AI literacy that sets informed users apart from everyone else.
