Students can usually sense something is automated when responses arrive very quickly, use slightly different phrasing than the educator’s usual voice, or lack the specific personal context a human would have (“I remember you mentioned last week that you were working on X”). None of these are dealbreakers if the response is useful and the agent is labelled honestly.
What students notice and dislike is when the agent fails to acknowledge its limits. “I’m not sure I understand your question — can you try rephrasing?” repeated three times in a conversation signals a poorly configured agent and produces frustration. A transparent “I don’t have that in my knowledge base — here’s who to ask” is experienced very differently. The failure mode that damages trust is not being AI — it’s being a poorly designed AI that pretends otherwise.

For coaches and consultants, the practical guidance is straightforward: be transparent, label the agent clearly, and design the handoff to a human to be warm and specific. Students who know there’s an AI handling routine questions and a real person handling the complex ones have a more accurate mental model of your support system — and a more realistic set of expectations about response times and answer depth.
Many educators find that students actually appreciate the agent once they understand what it’s doing. “I asked the campus assistant at midnight and got my answer immediately — then brought my harder question to the live session” is the experience you’re designing for. That’s genuinely better than waiting 24 hours for a human response to a routine question.
