The Transparency Question
Students deserve to know when they are talking to an AI agent and not to you. This is not just good ethics — it is good trust-building. If a student thinks they are getting a personal response from their instructor and later discovers it was an automated agent, they may feel deceived, even if the answer was accurate and helpful.
The fix is simple: label your agent clearly. Name it something distinct — “The TrainingSites Assistant” rather than “James” — and include a one-line note in its introduction: “Hi, I am an AI assistant. I can answer common questions using our knowledge base. For personal coaching, reach out to James directly.” That single sentence changes the entire dynamic.
The Accuracy Problem
An AI agent can give a confidently wrong answer — and a student who trusts your brand may act on that wrong answer without question. This is the most concrete ethical risk in using agents for education. A student who misunderstands an assignment deadline, a medication interaction in a health coaching programme, or a legal concept in a compliance course could face real consequences.
The mitigation is scope. Train your agent to answer only the categories of questions you have thoroughly documented and verified. Instruct it to say “I am not sure — please ask your instructor” for anything outside that scope. Claude and other modern AI models can follow this kind of bounded instruction reliably when it is written clearly into the agent’s system prompt.
What This Means for Educators
The ethical bar for using AI agents is not “never make mistakes.” No human support system clears that bar either. The bar is: are you being honest about what the agent is, are you monitoring what it says, and are you keeping a human escalation path open?
Review your agent’s conversation logs weekly, especially in the first few months. Look for patterns of wrong answers or student confusion and fix the underlying knowledge base article. An agent you have tuned and monitored is more reliable than a harried instructor answering at midnight when they are exhausted.

Label it clearly, scope it carefully, and keep your eyes on it. AI agents used ethically become a genuine extension of your teaching — available, consistent, and grounded in your verified content.
