It can produce answers that sound authoritative but are actually general knowledge presented with false specificity. This is the root of most AI hallucinations in agent contexts: not a broken model, but an under-briefed one reaching for something to say.
What Overconfidence Looks Like in Practice
An agent that lacks specific context about your program but gets asked “What is the enrollment deadline?” will not say “I don’t know” — it will generate a plausible-sounding date. An agent without clear escalation rules will answer sensitive questions it was never meant to handle, doing so confidently because it does not know it should be uncertain. These are not failures of the underlying model — they are failures of context design.
You can often detect under-briefed agents by the tone of their answers. They use phrases like “typically,” “generally,” or “in most cases” when you want specific answers about your specific program. They give correct-but-generic information when you need correct-and-specific. And they occasionally produce answers that are entirely fabricated but delivered with the same confident tone as the accurate ones.
What This Means for Educators
For coaches and consultants, an overconfident but inaccurate agent is a liability. If your campus agent tells a student the wrong enrollment date or makes a promise about program outcomes that you never authorized, you have a trust problem that no system prompt can walk back. The fix is always the same: give the agent accurate, specific information about the things it will be asked about, and explicit instructions to say “I’ll check with the team on that” for anything outside its verified knowledge.
