What AI Does Well on Unfamiliar Topics
If you’re teaching adjacent to your core expertise — or building a course on a topic you know well conceptually but haven’t practiced hands-on — AI is a genuinely powerful research tool. It can map the landscape of a field, identify the key concepts a beginner needs, summarize the major debates, and generate a logical teaching sequence.
Think of it like having a very well-read research assistant who has absorbed thousands of books and articles on the subject. That assistant can give you a strong overview. They can tell you what the experts say. They can help you structure your thinking. What they can’t give you is the judgment that comes from years of doing the thing yourself.
Where the Limits Show Up
The first limit is accuracy on specific claims. AI generates plausible text — and on topics outside your expertise, you may not have the background knowledge to catch an error. The safest approach when teaching outside your core expertise is to use AI for structure and concepts, then close the experience gap through interviews, case studies, or your own practice. Find someone who has done the thing and ask them what AI missed. Your role as the educator is to curate and contextualize — AI gives you the map, but you need someone who has walked the terrain to mark where the difficult parts actually are.
The Simple Rule
AI is excellent at giving you the skeleton of a topic you don’t know well. Your job is to add the muscle — the real examples, the practical nuances, the honest caveats. Use AI to get to 60% fast. Spend your remaining effort closing the gap with experience, not more AI prompts.
