An AI agent compares its original instructions to what it has accomplished after each step. When every requirement from the instructions is satisfied and there are no more useful actions to take, the agent stops working and delivers the results. It is essentially checking items off a mental to-do list.
The Grocery Shopping Trip
When you send someone to the grocery store with a list, they know they are done when every item is in the cart. They do not wander the aisles aimlessly after they have everything — they check the list, confirm nothing is missing, and head to checkout. An AI agent works the same way. The instructions are the shopping list, and the agent keeps working until every item is handled.
This is different from a regular chatbot, which never truly “finishes” — it just waits for your next message. An agent has a clear sense of completion because it was given a clear task with measurable outcomes.
How Completion Detection Works
At each step of the agent loop, the reasoning engine — powered by a model like Claude — evaluates two things. First: “Have I completed everything my instructions asked for?” Second: “Is there anything else I could usefully do right now?” If the answer to the first question is yes and the second is no, the agent wraps up.
For well-defined tasks, this is straightforward. If you tell an agent to “post a discussion prompt to the Community space and send a reminder email to the morning list,” the agent checks: community post published? Yes. Email sent? Yes. Task complete.
For open-ended tasks, completion is fuzzier. If you say “research the best AI tools for educators,” the agent has to make a judgment call about when it has gathered enough information to give you a useful answer. Good agents err on the side of thoroughness but set reasonable limits so they do not run forever.
Some agents also have built-in limits — a maximum number of steps, a time limit, or a token budget. When they hit these limits, they stop and report what they have accomplished so far, even if the task is not fully complete. This is a safety feature that prevents agents from running endlessly on ambiguous tasks.
What This Means for Educators
As a trainer or consultant, clear instructions help your agent finish reliably. “Post this week’s discussion prompt to the Campus Conversations space” is easy for an agent to complete and confirm. “Help me engage my community” is vague and might produce unpredictable behavior. The clearer your instructions, the more confidently the agent can determine when it is done.
The Bottom Line
An agent knows it is finished the same way you know you have finished a checklist — by comparing what was asked to what was done. Write clear, specific instructions with measurable outcomes, and your agent will reliably complete tasks and report back. Vague goals produce vague endings.
